Starting a new thread based on my comments in the water/methanol injection thread. From that thread:
We O-ringed my block (and "we" in this case means "it was Tim's (Jenkins) idea"), and this created a special head gasket requirement.
As I've come to learn, O-rings need to sit outside of the fire rings to reinforce them, and they need to form a continuous circle around them, making constant contact with the deck and the gasket, or else they act as ramps and becomes points of weakness. Seems obvious, right? Unfortunately, virtually all of the traditional composite-faced 22R-series head gaskets have metal reinforcement "webbing" between the fire rings on the deck side. This is bad, because it prevents the block mounted O-rings from sealing like they need to -- the webbing ramps the gasket up and prevents the O-ring from biting into the gasket behind the fire ring. I blew through my previous five gaskets because I didn't understand that instead of making my head gaskets stronger, my O-rings had actually made it weaker.
The Dana Corp. gasket we used last time had the webbing on the head side, which made it acceptable, and it worked pretty well. But even with the O-rings, the gasket itself wasn't strong enough to hold against the power I'm making. Too much of a good thing/be careful what you wish for/serves me right/etc.
My block is O-ringed, so running a pure copper head gasket is an option, but I've heard those are hell to live with on the street, and I'm looking for something that is reliable. I don't want to have to retorque the head every 500 miles just to keep this on the road. I want something I can install, retorque after 500 miles, and then stop futzing with.
Given all of this, it seems to me that I should pull out the O-rings and use a MLS gasket. My concern is that in order to use a MLS gasket (or more specifically the SCE Titan gasket I think this engine needs) I will need to machine the deck to a smoother surface finish than it currently has...and that's what's giving me pause, as I can't machine it in place and I really don't want to do another rebuild, but I guess that's neither here nor there: it's going to need whatever it needs to work, and it's important to me that I get that right.
I've read through the SCE site and know what their requirements are, but I'm interested in hearing from folks who have personal experience running their gaskets, preferably on a 22RTE, but really any real world with these gaskets would be appreciated. Tell me if you like it, what you had to to to the head and deck to run it, and anything else on the subject.
Thanks,
Jeff

well jeff i will say that i have been running a sce titan for about 9 to 10 thousand miles now with zero problems and i will also say that i very hard on this truck any tiom i drive it . im running 13-14 psi with those cheap nippon racing pistons. ive blown many gaskets just like u have and tryed almost everything exept o-ringing the block. i blew 3 diff kinds of mls gaskets, a rock auto and a factory toyota gasket so i figured what the heck i will try the sce and ive loved it so far. all of my other 5 head gaskets would last around 5000 miles and take a poo on me. i am running arp head studs on my motor as well. as far as the deck surface i would say that my deck surface is know were near the 50ra that they call for and i had zero problems with sealing. the block and head on my engine was re surfaced a few years ago when i re did the engine but i have never re done any machine work since then ive just cleaned the surface with scotch brite and thrown the gasket in. when i pick the gasket up from summit in look really nice, it has sealant around all of the coolant passages for a leak fee seal. i dont know what kind of boost or what kind of power u are making but my truck puts down 237 hp at the tire on 37 inch super swampers and the motor is under alot of stess at all times and like i said i have had no problems. i recomend the gasket but like all of these trucks what works for my motor may not work as well for your motor. thats my 2 cents and i hoped that helped u out a little
thanks Dustin
