i got a rebuilt 22rte in a 87 pickup with a rv cam, ct26, intake, 2 1/2"exhaust and about to add my intercooler. Everything else is stock running 7lbs of boost, so two questions- -once i add the intercooler should i tune the stock EFI system to accomadate the aftermarket parts? -and if so what is the best way to go about it with a stock ECU ? im not that savy yet with EFI and Tuning but im trying to achieve a proper tuning for my set up, can anybody give me a run down of where to start or steer me in the right direction. Thanks

The stock ECU has some (limited) adaptive qualities, so after you get your intercooler installed, and after every significant parts upgrade, disconnect the battery or unplug the EFU fuse and wait a couple of minutes, so the ECU resets itself to its default set of parameters. Install a fresh set of plugs at this time. Drive it for 200 miles, then pull the plugs and see how they look. This won't give you enough detail for in-depth tuning corrections, but it should give you a general idea of where you are at, mixture-wise.
Once you've got a couple of hundred miles on your ECU (and the adaptive values have adapted about as much as they can), take it to a dyno shop that has a wideband O2 and do a couple of dyno pulls. Post the results here. This will tell how your mixture is under load, and we cal tell you how things look (again, in broad strokes).
Tuning the stock EFI is challenging, because there aren't a lot of good ways to change the mixture on a load-point to load-point basis, only ways to change the mixture as a whole. Most of us that get serious with this motor end up eliminating the stock ECU in favor of a standalone system, mainly for this reason.

Jeff's 22R-TE PageThe vintage HTML ain't pretty(!), but the articles are still worth reading if you are new to the motor

ok sounds good, i got a new set of plugs ive been waiting to put in, so intercooler install is probably a week or so out. i have read a bunch of efi tunning postings and get lost in some of the stuff and i see when they go over to the stand alone system, hopefully i can get it close enough.... untill i want more power so something i might need to figure out in the meanwhile is my water temp sensors. there are two sensors i have unpluged. the first one is the sensor on the motor that i believe is to my in dash temp gauge(which i replaced with a true temp in the pillar guage pod) so the stock wire is not plugged in(in the wiring diagram it showed this one straight to the temp sensor). the second one is the temp sensor that was in the top of my t-stat housing, which broke and couldnt find a new one so i just got a 22re t-stat water pipe, but connected that wire to a temp sensor that is wedged in next to the tstat pipe so it gets some kind of reading(in the wiring diagram it showed this one go to the ECU). now since the EFI runs off air temp, water temp and etc... will either one of these affect my tunning? ohh yeah it dosent rev up when motor is cold just sits at 800 rpm, is that a reciprocal problem?
another question is -those cheap "$40 PERFORMANCE CHIPS!! " on ebay that tell the ecu that it is getting colder air, would that be something to consider with the intercooler? or will that just F stuff up? thanks

The temp sensor that goes to your gauge (middle of the lower manifold) - doesn't matter, it won't impact anything.
The temp sensor in the front of the lower manifold (there may be two) - will matter. One is for a cold start injector. The other is for engine temp sensor - it will massively impact how rich the truck is..
I'm not sure what you mean by it won't rev up - sits at 800 RPM when cold.. If you give it gas, does it die?
In your case, with an RV cam (probably engnbldrs?) - and an intercooler, you're in line with the stock ECU. The intercooler is going to drop your intake temperatures - perhaps significantly, but only at speeds above about 30mph. It will have no impact on you at slow speeds or idle speed... If the intercooler is before the AFM, it won't matter as the air temp sensor is going to pickup the right air temperature.
The only "ECU mod" that is even in the ballpark to reality is LC's "dial a Rich-Lean" - all it does is alter the temperature read by the engine temp sensor. Don't waste your money on it, and dont buy anything thats generic.

So the temp sensor im dealling with, was on top of the water outlet pipe it had a bung and sensor but the bung broke and i couldnt find that outlet pipe so i just got a 22re one and put a new tmp sensor on side of the outlet pipe.
i thought that it used to idle up when it was cold but it dosent it just sits at normal idle 800 rpm. i give it gas and it returns to idle just fine.
ok so i decided im going to order LC Enginerring's PLX wide band o2 sensor kit, weld in a seperate bung, and install the intercooler and then see where im sitting with my A/F ratio and i can see if i can go with the rich lean module or just step up to the stage 2 mass air flow kit by LC.

Yes, LC has some system (I forgot about) that should work with the factory AFM.. I have yet to see a review on it, so let us know...

so i just got my intercooler fully installed, a DIY kit from CX Racing and it worked great! for only $170 shipped, with all pipe couplers and clamps needed to figure it out! (note to all 22-rte Lovers that want a intercooler) CXRacing.com intercooler DIY kits any way i lost 2lbs of boost after the install and was curious if it has anything to do with different geometry of the intake volume? and then today i put a lower heat (6) sparkplugs in. so i cant afford the LC's stage 2 AFM kit right now, but i will run the 200 or so miles and pull the plugs then see where i am sittin with my mixture.

Jojo, What exactly did you order from CX racing, and where did you install the intercooler? I did not see a complete kit with couplers on the web site for $170. Can you supply pictures or part numbers? Thanks, T

JoJo,
Thanks for the update. Does your truck have A/C? T
